I was asked to write about the great lovers in history. After researching a few of the couples (fictional and real) who were considered to be great lovers, I made a realization. Most of the couples had very little time together and usually died a tragic death. If they did have time together, the lovers usually ended in divorce.
What puts a couple in the running to be considered great lovers?
Is it passion? Romeo and Juliet, Cleopatra and Mark Antony, Lancelot and Guinevere, all had tons of passion but not much longevity.
What about similar interests? Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck shared the love of acting. Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler were both stubborn and driven. Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert bonded with a love of music. These couples had similar desires but in the end went their separate ways.
How about compassion? John Smith and Pocahontas, and Princess Diana and Prince Charles had compassion for many people but not so much for each other.
And a few famous lovers were brought together through laughter. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and it breaks my heart to mention the split between Kermit the Frog and Miss. Piggy.
So where are the great lovers? Possibly Queen Victoria and Prince Albert might be in the race. They were married 21 years and had nine children. After he died, she wore black for the next 40 years until her death. Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi win the prize for over 60 years of marriage, four children and an arranged marriage when they were barely teenagers. The entire world interrupted their marriage, but it still lasted until she died at age 74. I give the grand prize to George and Barbara Bush. They have been married 71 years, had 6 children and are still going strong. When asked about love and the secret to her long marriage, Barbara Bush replied, “It’s about love and friendship”.
Great lovers are found in a combination of all the above; passion, shared interests, compassion, laughter and friendship.
